Photographing the night sky in the Rockies can be extremely rewarding. It’s not every day you have these amazing mountains available as interest in your night images. Night photography can mean many things:
- Stars: stars in the sky can create a beautiful feel, especially combined with some cloud.
- Milky Way: The Milky Way can create some real impact, especially combined with the mountainous landscape.
- Moonlit Landscape: The light from the moon can sculpt the landscape with some beautiful surreal light.
- Auroras: Although rare in the Banff Area, there’s always a chance we’ll see these amazing lights. This isn’t something we plan for and cannot guarantee.
With night photography, we want to plan this for days when there will be clear skies (very difficult to predict), or days when we will have decent moonlight. With a combination of either of these, we can capture some stunning images. If you’d like to plan for your best chance of favourable conditions, we suggest doing your research on Moon Phases and Star Positions, using apps such as: Stellarium or Photo Pills for the Stars and The Photographers Ephemeris for the Moon.
At the time of booking, or enquiry, we will also do some research to make sure that we have a decent chance. Night photography tours will not be cancelled if the conditions become unfavourable, as beautiful images can be captured even in adverse conditions.
We will determine the location for our shoot in the Banff / Canmore area depending on the conditions and time of year. Typical locations will be Two Jack Lake, Vermillion Lakes, and the Three Sisters. If you are looking to photograph the night sky in places like Moraine Lake, Lake Louise or along the Icefield Parkway, please look at our 5-hour Night Photography Tours.
