Canadian Rockies Photography Tour
Chasing the Drama & Light
Born and raised on the West Coast of Canada I spent most of my free time in the wilderness. Fishing, hiking and canoeing in remote rivers and lakes, I have a deep appreciation for the natural beauty of this country and many stories to tell, and would love to share them with you on this trip of a lifetime.
This is a unique opportunity to experience the majestic Canadian Rocky Mountains with snow-capped peaks around every corner, pristine aqua coloured lakes with stunning reflections of the mountains, beautiful crystal blue rivers snaking their way through the mountains and valleys, incredible waterfalls, gorges and canyons. Wandering through this paradise you will likely see Mountain Goats, Elk & Deer making this place their home and if you’re lucky we’ll even see some Moose and Bears. Don’t miss out on this adventure of a lifetime, an opportunity not to be missed.

Visiting the most beautiful locations in the Canadian Rockies at the best times of day to capture the breathtaking scenery. Also taking some time for walks throughout the national parks where you can enjoy nature, relax in your surrounds and just take in some of what the Rocky Mountains have to offer. Below are some of the locations we plan to visit during the tour. Note, depending on weather, time or closures not all sites may be visited or accessible, in the event of weather and closures we will seek alternatives.
Locations (subject to minor changes)
Note: Many of these will be sunrise and sunset locations, we’ll also see and photograph many additional locations in our travels as we chase the light and drama in the Rockies at this time of year.
Two Jack Lake
Bow Field Parkway
Mount Edith Cavell
Day 1: 4th of October (Calgary)
All guests arrive in Calgary and stay in a hotel near the airport to unwind and recover after their journey
Day 2 – 6: 5th – 9th October (Banff)
We’ll transfer from Calgary to Banff where we will stay in the heart of downtown Banff giving us easy access to all the amenities this picturesque town has to offer on our downtime. We’ll use Banff as our home base for our excursions along the Kananaskis Trail near Canmore, all around Banff and up to the edge of Southern entrance to the Icefield Parkway.
You will watch the sunrise and set over some of the most stunning scenery on earth including: the Valley of the 10 Peaks nestled up against the emerald water of Lake Moraine, the rugged Mount Rundle towering over Two Jack & Vermilion Lake, the calm and serenity of Herbert lake surrounded by snow capped peaks with waterfowl skimming the tops of the pristine waters, the jagged and vertical peaks of Castle Mountain with the Bow River running at our feet and many more equally stunning locations along the way. We’ll also travel through the back country of the Kananaskis area looking for unique photographic opportunities and wildlife.
While we are in the field we will take the opportunity to cover many important landscape photography techniques. We’ll take the opportunity at one of our early photographic locations to run through these techniques with our camera in hand, so that you can maximise your photography for the duration of the trip.
Photo Critique Workshop
We’ll spend an afternoon reviewing and critiquing each others photos on the big screen. In this session we’ll look at what is working and the areas we can improve our photography, while also getting to see how everyone else has been viewing and photographing the scenes. This is a great way to gain new perspectives and learn from each other. A very popular session with guests, you’ll also see the possibilities in your images as Aaron runs through some editing techniques to make your images jump off the screen.
Day 7 – 8: 9th – 11th October (Saskatchewan Crossing)
We’ll depart Banff and start making are way North along the Icefield Parkway stopping at Saskatchewan Crossing for 2 nights. From here we will visit some of the most stunning lakes and scenery in the Rocky Mountains. Here we are a little isolated from the day to day life of the towns of Jasper and Banff, and will only have our hotel and nature at our disposal.
Here we will be set in the peace and tranquillity of the Icefield Parkway between Banff & Jasper. We will be photographing the impressive Crowfoot Glacier nestled on the cliff edges of the steep rugged mountains surround Bow Lake, we’ll witness sunset high up above the aqua waters of Peyto lake and seeing the endless mountains fading into the distance, we’ll also be exploring the shores of the beautiful Saskatchewan River all while being surrounded by the most incredible scenery.
During the days we’ll continue chasing the light and drama in this region, capturing some of the most amazing scenery in the Canadian Rockies.
Day 9 – 11: 11th – 14th October (Jasper)
Arriving in Jasper, a much quieter town, but amazing scenery and wildlife. While in Jasper we are likely to see much more wildlife then we have seen along the way. We’ll visit some stunning locations including waterfalls, lakes, hot springs in the mountains and one of the most beautiful mountains and glaciers in the Rockies.
On our way to Jasper we’ll stop at the Columbia Icefields where if you wish you can get on one of the monstrous buses that will drive you up onto the glacier and give you an opportunity to witness up close the scale of this amazing place. We will continue from here to our home for the next 3 nights in the heart of Jasper.
During our time in Jasper we will see some amazing wildlife during our travels, and if safe we will stop to photograph these majestic creatures. We’ll head high up into the mountains to photograph Mount Edith Cavell one of the most impressive mountains in the Rockies with a Glacier Lake at it’s base with glaciers in the lake and high up above us on the cliffs and you hear the thundering sounds of the ice cracking, giving you shivers. We’ll also photograph the beautiful glacier fed waterfalls with incredible mountains as a back drop with the aqua waters thundering over the rocks, beautiful clear mountain lakes and up into the high mountains to relax in some hot springs if you wish, in the chilled mountain air.
Day 12: 14th October (Calgary)
We’ll transfer from Jasper back to a hotel in Calgary where we can relax, unwind and spend the night before catching our return flights home, or to wherever your travels are taking you next. Along the way we’ll travel back through the Icefield Parkway, Banff and the Kananaskis Areas, stopping along the way for any photographic opportunities.
