Photoshop for Beginners Calgary
Join Aaron Dowling a Professional Landscape & Travel Photographer in unlocking the secrets to editing in Photoshop. With photography there are two steps that we take to create our images and both are equally important. To realise our vision we first need to take the image, and for an image to stand out amongst the crowd, we are looking for visual impact in what we shoot, which plays a massive part in the creative process.
The creative process does not end in camera, we then need to finish off our images. There are many tools that we can use to do this, with Photoshop being only one, but probably the most powerful. Whether you are looking to do minor enhancements or work on your next masterpiece, using Photoshop is an extension of the creative process and another tool in our arsenal.

Aaron has been using Photoshop since the early 2000’s, initially to edit scanned film images, and has been experimenting with the possibilities of this powerful editing program ever since. He now develops Photoshop plugins and runs Photoshop workshops to share his knowledge and experience with others. He’s not a believer in keeping secrets when it comes to photography or editing and happily shares his knowledge with others.
This workshop is designed to give you a strong foundation in Photoshop and get you well on your way to using this tool to start creating a final image that you can be proud of. The workshop will be broken into two parts, the technical and the creative.
We will spend the first part of the workshop learning how to use the tools that we need to get the most out of Photoshop, which include:

- Dodging & Burning
- Adjustment Layers

With an understanding of the essential tools in Photoshop behind us, we can start to move into the creative uses for these tools and really start to see what’s possible. Here we will have some fun editing some photos and putting our own creative flare on some images, including:
- We’ll discuss vision, visualising a final image before you begin.
- Using adjustment layers to create contrast, colour enhancement and create impact.
- Painting on Layer Masks to work in small areas of the images.

“My husband and I recently attended Aaron’s ‘Photoshop For Beginners’ workshop. Neither of us had much experience with Photoshop and found the workshop to be extremely helpful. Aaron obviously has extensive knowledge of the software and explained everything in an easy to understand manner. He even provided us with some of his own images to edit on the day and a very thorough workbook, which outlined his own work-flow. Since attending the workshop, I have been using Photoshop exclusively for all my photo editing and am very pleased with the results. I had no idea you could do so much with the software. I would recommend Aaron’s workshops without hesitation – if you are thinking of learning Photoshop, just do it, you won’t regret it!”
“Thank you for introducing me to the complexities of photoshop in a clear and concise manner. After the first session I felt brain dead but excitingly it all came alive after the second week. Since then I have spent every spare moment practicing with your comprehensive notes beside me. I enjoy playing with all the possibilities available.
Thank you for encouraging me to get past the idea that Photoshop is only for competent computer users.”
“Recently I attended your Photoshop workshop for beginners, I wanted to let you know that not only did I enjoy the day with you I learnt heaps that is now standing me in good stead to get me using Photoshop. Before your course I was only using camera raw and editing to a small degree. Now I feel confident to use layers and really have a play with my photos. Your course was a great spring board to gain confidence and knowledge to really get into it. I really enjoyed your teaching style which was informative and easy to understand. Thank you and I hope to see you in a more advanced course.”
“Before I did the ‘Photoshop for Beginners’ course, Photoshop seemed like a minefield of buttons and terminology very foreign to myself. This course was perfect for understanding the basics of the software and how to apply the editing techniques to improve the photos. There are plenty of videos to watch to learn about Photoshop but you can’t beat learning from within a small group with interaction and feedback. Great course and at least now I understand the basics and can start to play with the software. Thanks Aaron.”
