Itinerary

Day 1: Vancouver (1 night)

All guests arrive in Vancouver and stay in a hotel near the airport to unwind and recover after their journey.

Day 2 – 5: Tofino (4 nights)

Departing Vancouver, we’ll take a BC Ferry to Vancouver Island, and drive from the East to West side of the Island. On our way, we’ll pass through Cathedral Grove an ancient old growth forest. Some of the trees here are 800 years old, reaching heights of 75m (250 ft) and up to 9m (27ft) in circumference.

Tofino is a small town on the west coast. It sprawls on a peninsula within Clayoquot Sound, characterised by wild natural scenery including lakes, inlets and ancient rainforest. Sandy beaches with year-round surfing facilities include Cox Bay, Chesterman Beach and popular Long Beach, part of the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. The scenery in and around Tofino is some of the most exquisite on the island with excellent wildlife and landscape photographic opportunities.

During our time in Tofino we’ll take 4 wildlife tours, with the opportunity to see all types of wildlife from black bears, whales, seals, eagles and more. The coastline of Tofino and Ucluelet are stunning, with rugged rock formations and Douglas Fir trees lining the islands and coast. We’ll shoot sunrises and sunsets at many of these beautiful coastal locations and play with long exposure techniques to create striking images.

Day 6 – 9: Telegraph Cove (4 nights)

After breakfast in Tofino, we’ll pack up for the longest drive on the tour, approximately 7 hours. Traversing back to the East Side of the island, we’ll then drive North to the quaint and picturesque small village of Telegraph Cove.  Telegraph Cove is located on the North East of Vancouver Island and accesses the Johnstone Strait and the Broughton Archipelago. A village of approximately 20 people, got its name back in the early 1900’s when it was established as a linesman station for the Telegraph. It’s a beautiful location with old buildings built out over the water on pilings, and is now a popular tourist destination for adventurers and wildlife tours. The area of the island has its own climate, created by the vast inlets and cool air that blow through the straits.

During our time in Telegraph Cove we’ll be taking in 3 wildlife tours. These tours will include a Grizzly Bear tour to the mainland, where we’ll see the bears feeding on spawning salmon. We’ll also take 2 Orca and Whale watching tours, searching for the resident and transient killer whales that spend much time in these waters. With hydrophones on board we’ll take the opportunity to listen to these beautiful animals communicating with each other. We are going to make our way into a remote inland cave system, where you will be blown away by the variety and beauty and stunning images. The small village of Telegraph Cove is also one of the most beautiful fishing villages to photograph, and we will spend some time walking the docks to capture views of this amazing place.

Day 10: Victoria (1 night)

After breakfast, we’ll pack up and make our way to Victoria, the capital of British Columbia. Victoria is a beautiful city, but with a small town feel. After settling in to the hotel in the heart of the city, we’ll take off on a city walk with cameras in hand. We’ll do some street photography through some of the iconic areas of town, making our way into the harbour. We will have dinner over the inner harbour taking in the views of this beautiful city.

Following dinner, we will photograph the inner harbour, including the iconic Empress Hotel and Parliament Buildings at sunset and the blue hour.

Day 11: Victoria – Vancouver (1 night)

In the morning, we walk the warehouse districts, capturing the early morning light on these historic buildings. After breakfast, I will take you on a driving tour of Victoria, stopping at Beacon Hill Park and a couple other coastal locations. Following our drive, we will make our way to Butchart Gardens, where we’ll stop and visit these impressive gardens for the better part of the morning and afternoon. You can’t help but be impressed by the work that’s gone into making this one of the most spectacular gardens in the world.

Departing Butchart Gardens we’ll make our way to the ferry terminal for our return back to Vancouver. We’ll look to catch the ferry a little later in the evening, to give us some nice soft light during the ferry ride and an opportunity to take photos of the islands. Arriving back in Vancouver at our hotel our photography trip will have reached an end. We’ll say goodbye to what is sure to have been an incredible 11 days of exploration and photography.
