Itinerary

Note: all of our itineraries are a guide. We will be paying close attention to the conditions, and chasing the best light and photographic opportunities throughout the tour.

Day 1: Calgary (1 night)

All guests arrive in Calgary and stay in a hotel near the airport to unwind and recover after their journey.

Day 2 – 6: Banff (5 nights)

We’ll transfer from Calgary to Banff where we will stay in the heart of downtown Banff giving us easy access to all the amenities this picturesque town has to offer on our downtime. We’ll use Banff as our home base for our excursions along the Kananaskis Trail near Canmore, all around Banff and up to the edge of Southern entrance to the Icefield Parkway.

You will watch the sunrise and set over some of the most stunning scenery on earth including: the Valley of the 10 Peaks nestled up against the emerald water of Lake Moraine, the rugged Mount Rundle towering over Two Jack & Vermilion Lakes, the calm and serenity of Herbert lake surrounded by snow capped peaks with waterfowl skimming the tops of the pristine waters, the jagged and vertical peaks of Castle Mountain with the Bow River running at our feet and many more equally stunning locations along the way.

We will also run two workshops while we are in Banff to ensure that you get the most out of your photography during the tour.

Workshop 1: Landscape Photography Techniques & Composition

We will cover all the important techniques in landscape photography so you get the most out of your trip, such as: exposure bracketing, panorama photography, hyper focal distance, using filters for creative effect and using our cameras in full manual mode to take complete control over our imagery. We will also cover compositional tips to help your images jump of the screen. Although rules are meant to be broken there are some fundamentals that lead to great images and these should always be kept in mind while assessing and shooting a scene.

Workshop 2: Photo Critique

We’ll spend an afternoon reviewing and critiquing each others photos on the big screen. In this session we’ll look at what is working and the areas we can improve our photography, while also getting to see how everyone else has been viewing and photographing the scenes. This is a great way to gain new perspectives and learn from each other. During this very popular workshop I will also edit some of your photos to show the potential in your images, your laptops will not be required.

Day 7 – 8: Saskatchewan Crossing (2 nights)

We’ll depart Banff and start making our way North along the Icefield Parkway stopping at Saskatchewan Crossing for 2 nights. From here we will visit some of the most stunning lakes and scenery in the Rocky Mountains. At Saskatchewan Crossing we are isolated from the day to day life of the towns of Jasper and Banff, and we will only have the hotel and nature at our disposal.

Here we will be set in the peace and tranquility of the Icefield Parkway between Banff & Jasper. We will be photographing the impressive Crowfoot Glacier nestled on the cliff edges of the steep rugged mountains surround Bow Lake, we’ll witness sunset high up above the aqua waters of Peyto lake and seeing the endless mountains fading into the distance, we’ll also be exploring the shores of the beautiful Saskatchewan River all while being surrounded by the most incredible scenery.

Day 9 – 12: Jasper (4 nights)

On our way to Jasper we’ll stop at many locations along the way, including the Columbia Icefields. Late in the afternoon or early evening, we will arrive in Jasper, our home for the next 3 nights.

During our time in Jasper we will see some amazing wildlife during our travels, and if it’s safe we will stop to photograph these majestic creatures. We’ll head high up into the mountains to photograph Mount Edith Cavell one of the most impressive mountains in the Rockies with a Glacier Lake at it’s base with glaciers in the lake and high up above us on the cliffs. You’ll hear and feel the thundering sounds of the ice cracking, giving you shivers. We’ll also photograph the beautiful glacier fed waterfalls with incredible mountains as a back drop with the aqua waters thundering over the rocks, beautiful clear mountain lakes and up into the high mountains to relax in some hot springs if you wish, in the chilled mountain air.

For those who would like to get on the Rocky Mountaineer back to Vancouver you may decide to leave us here.

Day 13: Calgary (1 night)

We’ll transfer from Jasper back to a hotel in Calgary where we can relax, unwind and spend the night before catching our return flights home, or to wherever your travels are taking you next.
